experience
& skills

Leadership

  • As President of Durham Students’ Union I faced up to and solved long term financial troubles and led successfully from the front on difficult issues ranging from Tuition Fees to Union Reform.

Innovation & Problem Solving

  • To try and solve a funding crisis in student activties at Durham I brought together the previously disparate areas of student life, Sport, Colleges and the union. I knew to acheive the required support and overcome in-fighting I had to run a unified and effective campaign.
  • At the age of 16 I was a finalist for a national award for innovation.

Flexibility

  • In almost every situation I go beyond what is required of me often taking on extra responsibility and generating new ideas. Whilst at Durham Students’ Union I started the first Annual Awards Dinner, planning , coordinating and securing it’s sponsorship.

Motivation

  • Having a wide and diverse range of interests and activities has only been possible through being highly motivated to succeed. During my degree, as well as studying, I ran my company Supersonicdesign, put on plays and was heavily involved in the Students’ Union. This was achieved by putting in many late nights, early mornings and sustaining my drive dispite frequent set-backs.

Networking

  • Through both graphic design and my work within the university I have built contacts and developed relationships through Durham City and the north east. I turned contacts made through social situations into profitable business arrangements.

Negotiating

  • Effectively engaged in committee negotiations saving students at Durham University £1million on the cost of living in college accommodation.
  • As a representative I took a tough stance on key issues and was creative in the ways I influenced the debate in my favor.

Communication

  • Introduced new initiatives to improve lines of communication & perception with students.
  • Conceived and implemented a region wide marketing campaign for a production of West Side Story resulting in all performances selling out.

Technical Skills

  • Designed and built an advanced content management system using XHTML, CSS, PHP and Javascript as well as many other websites for companies and campaigns.
  • Taught myself to use sophisticated software and kept pace with industry development and the latest techniques by reading online resources.
  • Highly proficient and award winning Graphic Design & Desktop Publishing skills.

  • I was responsible for representing students at a difficult time in the university sector with the arrival of tuition fees student expectations were high and the university struggling to deliver.
  • I was often required to process and form opinions on a large amount of information rapidly.
  • I saw clearly the problems with the union’s finances and comissioned an Audit which gave weight to my arguments giving me the necessary support to tackle and solve issues which had beleaguered the union for many years.
  • Innovation and fresh ideas were a theme to my time as President. I broke through traditional divides within the student community to run an effective campaign on the funding for student activities and didn’t give up dispite diversionary tactics.
  • Successfully pushed for change at a national level changing the policy of a large organisation for the benefit not only of the students I represent, but of future generations of students.
